Hot Tub Usage and Maintenance Guide
Purchasing a hot tub is a big investment that you’ll want to enjoy for as many years as possible. With regular hot tub maintenance, you’ll be able to keep it running smoothly and extend its life in just a few easy steps.
When people consider buying a hot tub, one of the first things they wonder is how much work it will be to take care of it. The good news is that hot tubs aren’t nearly as much work as many people think. All you need are the right tools and a solid schedule to make taking care of your hot tub effortless!
Why Is Hot Tub Maintenance Important?
Keeping your hot tub well-maintained will extend its life while protecting yourself from germs and bacteria that can form in water that is not appropriately treated or cleaned regularly. This will also help reduce any future repairs your hot tub may need as it ages. Creating an easy-to-follow routine for hot tub maintenance will help keep its water clean and clear and make your system run flawlessly. The last thing you want is bacteria to build up or contaminants entering your water, making it cloudy or foamy.
General Guidelines
- Heating: It is strictly forbidden to heat the hot tub while it is empty or half-empty. Always ensure the water level reaches at least 10 cm from the top before heating.
- Fuel: Use firewood, briquettes, or other dry wood for heating. Do not use coal.
- Water Stirring: Use a paddle to stir the water periodically to ensure even heating.
- Temperature Check: Use a thermometer to check the water temperature. The recommended range for outdoor bathing is 36-38°C. Heating above 38°C is not only dangerous for the hot tub and its interior materials, but it can also pose health risks. Excessive temperatures can cause overheating of the tub’s components, leading to potential damage and costly repairs. Moreover, prolonged exposure to water above 38°C can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as dehydration, dizziness, and heat stroke. Always ensure that the water temperature remains within the safe range to protect both your hot tub and your health.
- Post-Bathing: After each use, drain the tub completely. Never drain the water while the oven is hot.
- Cold Weather Precautions: In freezing temperatures, drain both the tub and the oven. If the oven has frozen, ensure it is fully thawed before lighting a fire.
- Water Type: Do not use salted or sea water, as this requires a different type of oven steel. Contact your manager for details.
- Supervision: Never leave children or people with disabilities unattended during the heating and bathing process.
Maintenance Schedule
Daily:
- Sanitizer Check: Check and adjust sanitizer levels after each use.
- Water Temperature: Ensure the water temperature is consistent with your settings.
Weekly:
- Filter Maintenance: Rinse the filters to keep them free of debris and ensure efficient operation.
- Water Surface Skimming: Remove leaves, bugs, and debris from the water surface.
- Shock Treatment: Perform a shock treatment to sanitize the water completely.
Monthly:
- Filter Cleaning: Soak the filters in a cleaning solution to remove deep-seated dirt and grime.
- Inspect Jets: Ensure all jets are functioning properly.
- Water Chemistry: Test and adjust pH and alkalinity levels.
Quarterly:
- Deep Cleaning: Drain and thoroughly clean the hot tub shell.
- Water Change: Completely drain and refill the hot tub.
- System Flush: Use a line flush to clean the internal plumbing.
- Balance Chemicals: After refilling, balance the water chemistry.
Yearly:
- Exterior Treatment: Treat the exterior wood with linseed oil or another wood impregnator to extend the tub’s service life.
- Filter Replacement: Replace the filters to ensure optimal performance.
- Cover Inspection: Inspect and clean the hot tub cover to prevent mold and mildew.
Detailed Steps for Maintenance
- Water Circulation: Run the pump to circulate water daily, ensuring the filter captures contaminants. Ensure water is moving through the filter daily to keep it clean. Circulate for at least 20 minutes each day to prevent bacteria buildup.
- pH and Alkaline Balance: Test water pH (aim for 7.4-7.6) and alkalinity (80-120 ppm) using test strips or a digital meter. Adjust as necessary with pH increasers or decreasers.
- Sanitization: Use appropriate sanitizers like chlorine or bromine. Adjust levels to ensure water safety and clarity.
- Shock Treatment: Perform weekly to eliminate contaminants and refresh water quality.
- Change Your Water Regularly Drain and refill your hot tub every 3-4 months for chlorine systems or annually for saltwater systems. Clean the shell thoroughly before refilling.
- Clean Your Filters Rinse filters every 1-2 weeks and soak them in a filter cleaner every few months. Replace filters as needed based on wear.
- Skimming and Vacuuming: Skim the water surface and vacuum the tub regularly to remove debris and prevent buildup.
- Deep Cleaning: Drain the hot tub, clean with a non-abrasive cleaner, and rinse thoroughly before refilling. Drain the water, clean the shell with a soft cloth and gentle cleaner, and ensure it’s dry before refilling. Clean the plumbing equipment periodically.
- Buy The Right Cover (And Use It) Purchase a cover that will effectively protect your hot tub based on your climate. Regularly clean the cover and use a protectant for added durability.
- Winterizing: If not using the hot tub during winter, follow the cold weather precautions to prevent damage from freezing. If shutting down for winter, drain the tub, pipes, and jets completely to prevent freezing and damage. If running through winter, maintain regular checks and water treatments.
